About 30 minutes, indoors, for ages 5 to 7.

Where it works

Works in any indoor space

Who it's for

ages 5 to 7

Try this adventure now:

  • Start with someone opening a door
  • Add a character nobody expected
  • Give somebody a problem
  • Change where the story is happening
  • Add something that talks
  • Make it night time
  • Bring back something from earlier in the story

Today's Challenge

  1. 1.Whose sentence changed the story most?
  2. 2.Where did it end up compared to where it started?
  3. 3.Which part would you keep if you told it again?

Quick Start: What you need

  • 1Nothing at all. Just go outside and look.

The Goal

One sentence each, passed around. Works in any line, in the dark, anywhere you cannot move.

How to start

  1. 1

No supplies needed. You can start from wherever you are.

  2. 2

Head indoors and see how many you can find: Start with someone opening a door, Add a character nobody expected, Give somebody a problem, Change where the story is happening.

  3. 3

Talk about what you are seeing. Start with "Whose sentence changed the story most?"

  4. 4

Print the worksheet to check things off as you find them, and keep it afterwards.

Write The Best Bit

Write down the one sentence from your story that everybody liked most.

Stories were passed around out loud like this for thousands of years before anyone wrote them down, which is why the oldest ones repeat so much. Repetition is how you remember a story with no book.

If you want to push it further

  • Get all the way to an ending without anyone breaking the rules
  • Bring back a detail from the very first sentence at the end

Print it and go

The worksheet has the checklist, the prompts, and a space to draw in. One page, ready for a bag or a glovebox.
